UBC Mechanical Engineering: Overview
Stephanie Pugh - May 19th, 2022
Did you know that there are 14 different programs that you can specialize in at UBC Engineering? One of these specializations is Mechanical Engineering.
Mechanical engineering may be the field for you if you have “big ideas” and the desire to see a concept through design, analysis, and prototyping. Mechanical engineering is a broad area that deals with the analysis, design, manufacture, and maintenance of any system that involves movement and energy.
Mechanical engineers are in great demand across a wide range of industries, from inventing equipment like robots, planes, and human-body technologies to working on solutions to today’s problems like developing clean energy technology or lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

Why Choose UBC Mechanical Engineering?
1. UBC is one of Canada’s top 3 engineering schools!
UBC Engineering fosters an atmosphere that values innovation and entrepreneurship, and their research, resources, and programmes help to improve people’s lives globally.
2. The program helps to solve real-world problems.
Do you wish to make a positive impact on the world? Or could you improve a part of it? Engineering is a fantastic choice if you want to challenge yourself to solve real-world problems. You’ll be learning from some of the best experts in their fields, as UBC engineering faculty are known for finding fresh and practical solutions to complicated problems.
3. Learn a broad range of fundamentals.
In the program, you’ll start by learning the fundamentals of solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics, vibrations, heat transfer, controls, and design at UBC’s Mechanical Engineering program. You can also focus on fields that interest you, such as biomechanics, aerospace, robotics and mechatronics, alternative-fuel technology, and energy-efficient design.
How Do You Get Into UBC Mechanical Engineering?
Before choosing to specialize in mechanical engineering, you must first have a basic knowledge of engineering concepts in first-year. All of these programmes result in a Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) degree. Lectures, cutting-edge laboratory facilities, team-based projects, early design experience, and a co-op option are all used to enhance course material
- Your first year:
Students who attend the Bachelor of Applied Science (Engineering) degree directly from high school must complete a foundational year curriculum that includes chemistry, arithmetic, physics, communications, and introductory engineering courses. It is designed to give a solid knowledge foundation for all first-year engineering students in order to prepare them for a successful and pleasurable professional career while also allowing them to explore the numerous engineering fields available to them.
- 2nd-year placement:
Students complete the 2nd-year placement process at the end of year one in order to apply for one of the 14 engineering programs available, which they will begin in the second year. Students are encouraged to learn more about their choices by attending open houses, reviewing departmental pages, networking with existing students and teachers, and conducting their own research.
After completing the Mech 2 program in your second year, mechanical engineering students at the Vancouver campus have the option to enter one of the following program Options:
- General Mechanical
