What You Need to Know Before Applying to SFU

Ranked among the top 12 universities in Canada, Simon Fraser University is a dream school for many! SFU’s health sciences and physiology programs give it a strong reputation among BC universities. Here are a few things to know before you start the SFU admissions process!

The SFU Campus

SFU has three campuses located across the Lower Mainland of BC in Burnaby, Surrey, and Vancouver. Students enjoy the mild climate of the west coast and the closeness to forests, mountains, and beaches. The SFU campus also tends to be a very popular location for filmmakers, so on your way to class, you might catch a behind-the-scenes glimpse of some of your favourite movies or TV shows!

The campus is mid-sized with approximately 34,990 students. Students describe the campus environment as relaxed, with plenty of opportunities to get involved through clubs and extracurriculars. You’ll also find many nature lovers and opportunities to explore BC’s beautiful outdoors!

Getting into SFU

The SFU admissions process is similar to many universities in Canada.

The process starts with Education Planner BC. This one platform allows you to apply to any university in British Columbia, making it easy to apply to multiple universities at once. Once you create an account, you’ll need to fill out some basic information about yourself and select the universities and programs you want to apply to. You will eventually also need to upload your transcripts to verify your grades.

You can apply to SFU via GrantMe while also getting guidance and support along the way!

The acceptance rate is a bit higher than average at 59%. This means that about three out of five students who apply get accepted.

For some programs, the SFU admissions process also includes a supplementary application. Most of the questions on this extra application are open-ended and focus on getting a sense of who you are and how you would contribute to SFU. This gives you a chance to highlight your volunteer experience and other non-academic achievements that would make you an excellent future SFU student.

At GrantMe, we’ve helped hundreds of students apply to SFU and get in. As a student on our platform, we can provide with you essay editing and mentorship to ensure you submit a stellar application!

Paying for SFU

The SFU admissions process is just one step. Next, you’ll want to look at SFU tuition fees and scholarships! The average tuition at SFU is on the low end of the spectrum, at $2,770 per year.

What’s even better is that SFU offers many scholarships to help offset this cost! Many of the awards are academic-based, so if you have strong grades you’re in luck! Other awards recognize excellence in areas like community involvement or athletic achievement. Bursaries given for financial need may also be an option.
