How Many Students Apply to McGill?

McGill University is a public research university in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Founded in 1821 by royal charter granted by King George IV, McGill is one of three universities in the country that were founded before Confederation. The university bears the name of James McGill, a Scottish merchant from Glasgow whose bequest in 1813 formed the university’s precursor, McGill College. The main campus covers 375 acres (152 hectares) on the south side of Mount Royal in Downtown Montreal; the city’s second-largest campus surrounds Sherbrooke Street West at the foot of the campus proper. The university also operates two urban campuses: the Macdonald Campus in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue and Montréal’s Outremont borough and the Montréal Royal Victoria Hospital.

General Number of Applicants

Each year, the university receives over 40,000 applications from students worldwide. Of those applicants, only about 16,000 are offered admission. With an acceptance rate of just over 30%, McGill is one of the most selective universities in Canada. The majority of those who are accepted into the school have an academic average of 90% or higher. In addition to solid grades, McGill also looks for well-rounded students who have demonstrated leadership and involvement in extracurricular activities. With such a competitive admissions process, it’s no wonder that so many students aspire to study at this university.
