How Does My Child Apply to Canadian Universities?

The process of applying to Canadian universities can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. There are a few key things to keep in mind that will make the process much smoother. Each school has different requirements, so it’s important to make sure you’re familiar with the specific requirements of the schools you’re interested in. This blog will cover the general process of making Canadian university applications.

General Application Portal

The first step in applying to any Canadian university is creating an account on an application portal. In BC, it is done through EducationPlannerBC. In Ontario, it is done through Ontario Universities Application Centre (OUAC). In Alberta, it is done through ApplyAlberta. This will give you access to the online application for all participating schools. Once you have created your account, you will be able to fill out your personal information and academic history and submit your supporting documents.

Application Fee

A non-refundable application fee must be paid to submit your application. This fee is generally around CAD 125, but it can vary depending on the school you are applying to.

Supporting Documents

There are a few key documents that you will need to complete your application. These include:

Official transcripts: These must be sent directly from your school and should include all courses and grades from your secondary school and/or post-secondary institution.

Standardized test scores: If you are applying to a program that requires entrance exams, you will need to have your official scores sent directly from the testing agency.

English proficiency test scores: If English is not your first language, you may be required to submit proof of your English proficiency. The most common tests are TOEFL and IELTS.

University Specific Application

In addition to the general application, you may also be required to complete a university-specific supplemental application. This will usually include additional personal information and essay questions. The supplemental application fee is generally around CAD 50.

Interviews/Portfolios

For some programs, you may be required to participate in an interview or submit a portfolio as part of your application. This is usually done after your initial application has been reviewed.

Essays

Many programs will also require you to submit one or more essays as part of your application. These essays allow you to demonstrate your writing ability and highlight your strengths and interests.

Application Timeline

The timeline for applying to Canadian universities varies depending on the province you are applying to, but the general timeline is as follows:

September-October: Application portals open

November-January: Applications are due

February-May: Admission decisions are released

Making Your Decision

Once you have heard back from all the schools you applied to, it’s time to decide. Each offer of admission will come with an acceptance package that includes important information about tuition fees, scholarships, and student services. Make sure you read through this carefully before making your decision.
