How to get into: York Psychology

York’s Psychology program ranks among the top 10 programs for psychology in Canada according to Maclean’s magazine (2021) and among the top 100 programs in the world according to the QS World University Rankings 2020.

Psychology is dedicated to the scientific study of behaviour including thought, feeling and action, and is viewed from social, developmental and biological perspectives. At York, you can study virtually all of the areas of psychology as their program offers the largest variety and diversity of courses of any psychology program in Canada!

York provides learning opportunities and research experience in many different areas of Psychology including developmental and social psychology, abnormal psychology and counselling, behavioural and cognitive neuroscience, history and theory, statistics and quantitative methods, as well as explore a wide variety of topics ranging from personality, psychological disorders, child development and much, much more!

Admission Requirements

You can choose to take your Psychology degree as a Bachelor, or a Bachelor of Science, through the Faculty of Health at York. Depending on what degree you want to apply for, it will require different admission requirements revolving around your high school grades and courses!

For Psychology (BA)

Requirements for admission include:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)
  • ENG4U (Grade 12 English)
  • And five additional 4U or M courses (Grade 12 classes)

For Psychology (BSc)

Requirements for admission include:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)
  • ENG4U (Grade 12 English)
  • 4U math (Grade 12 Math)
  • SCH4U or SPH4U (Chemistry or Physics 12)
  • And three additional 4U or M courses (Grade 12 classes)

Grade Average Needed for York Psychology

To gain admission to the Psychology program at York, your academic average should be in the mid-to-high 70s. However, for a competitive average against other applicants, we suggest you aim for an average in the high 80s-90s!

Admissions Process

To be admitted into York Psychology, you must:

  1. Meet minimum admission requirements for York University
  2. Meet the program-specific requirements for the Psychology program
  3. Know the application deadlines
  4. Submit your application
  5. Submit all required documentation

A review of your holistic academic profile, from high-school to the present, is undertaken by York when making admission decisions.

Possession of the minimum requirements or admission average ranges that are listed online or within university publications should not be viewed as a guarantee of admission! When making holistic assessments, York considers a variety of aspects including consistency of academic results over multiple years, results in specific course prerequisites, repeated course attempts and external test scores.
