UBC Sauder is a Broad-Based Admission. This means that in addition to excellent grades, outstanding candidates for UBC Sauder must possess great leadership, teamwork and interpersonal skills. They are looking for those who are capable of setting and achieving goals, show an ability to deal with challenging situations, demonstrate solid communication skills and are involved with the community.

How can you tell if you’re a fit for the UBC Sauder program?

Along with a strong academic record, if you’re enthusiastic and involved, show great communication skills and can demonstrate teamwork and leadership potential – chances are you’ll be a great fit for the program and your undergraduate studies will be successful and rewarding.

You can apply to UBC Sauder whether you are coming from a high school or a post-secondary school. You can apply to Year 1 if you have not yet started post-secondary studies or you have completed a maximum of 6 credits of post-secondary coursework. Applicants from post-secondary institutions may be eligible to transfer to Year 2 or Year 3 of the program.

UBC Sauder Admission evaluation

Although UBC Sauder does not admit students solely on the basis of grades, academic performance is extremely important. Only applicants with competitive grades are eligible to be considered for admission.

Please note that the course grades used in the calculation of your average and what is considered competitive will depend on where you are currently attending secondary school and the grading scale used by your school.

Personal Profile

Part of your online application will include your Personal Profile. In this section you’ll have an opportunity to talk more about the things that are important to you, your significant achievements, what you’ve learned from your experiences, and the challenges that you’ve overcome. You’ll do this by providing a combination of short written essays and video responses to prerecorded interview questions.

The Personal Profile asks you six or seven questions about challenges you have overcome, significant achievements in your life, your academic pursuits, and what you have learned from these experiences. The questions differ depending on the degree program you are applying for, and you’ll find out what you’ll be asked when you begin your application.

How do they assess your profile?

When theey evaluate your application, two trained UBC readers will look for four qualities in your Personal Profile: engagement and accomplishment, leadership, substance, and voice. This is a chance for them to find out more about you and your experiences beyond academics. They want to hear about your life and achievements – what have you learned, and how have these moments allowed you to grow

They are not looking for a particular experience, and there are no right or wrong answers. Be authentic, and focus on what you want to say about yourself and how you want to say it, rather than writing what you think they want to hear!

What makes a good profile?

Outstanding applicants will possess great leadership, teamwork and interpersonal skills. UBC Sauder is looking for those who are capable of setting and achieving goals, show an ability to deal with challenging situations, demonstrate solid communication skills and are involved with the community. When you complete the application you will need to draw on your real-life experiences inside and outside the classroom. Remember that when they assess your Personal Profile, UBC Sauder takes into account all of the activities you’ve done across multiple years, not just the ones you hoped to complete in Grade 11 or 12! Your examples can come from any aspect of your life, including within your family or smaller community, or the challenges you may have faced while handling disruptions from COVID-19. There are no right or wrong answers – they’re not looking for certain activities or a long list of achievements, but rather your reflections on what you’ve experienced.

To apply, you must complete and provide:

• UBC online application
  • Complete and submit the UBC online application at you.ubc.ca
  • The application deadline is 11:59pm PST January 15, 2022.
  • NOTE: If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and wish to be considered for a Presidential Scholars Award, you must submit your application by December  1,  2021.
• An interim transcript of your grades.
• Additional documentation: proof of English Language proficiency, SAT scores (for US students) and more may be required depending on where you’ve completed secondary school. Visit you.ubc.ca/applying-ubc for more information.
